Junior or senior: what to put first
Applying at junior level
Show the sites you have worked on, their scale and what you checked or supervised yourself. Graduate engineers in the UAE are hired on practical exposure — pours, inspections, setting-out — and on software such as AutoCAD and P6.
Applying at senior level
Lead with project value, structure type and your role in delivery: packages you owned, teams you ran, consultants and authorities you dealt with. Mention FIDIC contract administration and claims or variations if you have handled them.
Common mistakes on civil engineer CVs
Omitting project scale — storeys, kilometres, contract value.
Not saying whether you worked for the contractor, consultant or client.
Leaving out your Society of Engineers status or eligibility.
Listing every software you have ever opened instead of the ones you use weekly.
What is specific to the UAE
Gulf contractors and consultants read project scale first: storeys, kilometres, contract value. Put them in every bullet, and name the contract form (FIDIC) and the planning tool (P6) — both are routine filters in UAE ads.
Like every CV for a UAE employer, yours should also show these details near the top — a generic Western CV leaves them out, and recruiters here filter on them:
- Visa status — e.g. "Employment visa", "Visit visa until 12 March", "Golden visa" — or "Requires sponsorship".
- Notice period — How soon you can start. Recruiters here shortlist on it.
- Nationality — Customary on UAE CVs, and some roles and visas depend on it.
- UAE driving licence — Only if you hold one — required for many field roles.
- Languages — With a level for each. Arabic only if you can work in it.

Is Gulf experience required for civil engineering jobs in Dubai?
