Make every line specific

Most financial controller CVs describe duties. The ones that get shortlisted describe results. The rewrite adds detail you already know — numbers, scale, tools — never experience you don't have.

Junior or senior: what to put first

Applying at junior level

Moving up from senior accountant or audit senior? Show the parts of the controller job you already do: consolidation, audits, controls. Employers promote into this role on proof of ownership.

Applying at senior level

Lead with scope: entities, countries, revenue and team size. Then the improvements you drove — faster close, clean audits, systems, tax readiness.

Common mistakes on financial controller CVs

  • Not stating the number of entities and countries.

  • Leaving out tax, which UAE controllers are now expected to own.

  • Listing duties rather than improvements.

  • Burying your audit background when employers value it.

What is specific to the UAE

UAE controllers are expected to own tax as well as reporting. If you have handled VAT, Corporate Tax registration or transfer pricing, say so — it is often the deciding line between two strong candidates.

Like every CV for a UAE employer, yours should also show these details near the top — a generic Western CV leaves them out, and recruiters here filter on them:

  • Visa status — e.g. "Employment visa", "Visit visa until 12 March", "Golden visa" — or "Requires sponsorship".
  • Notice period — How soon you can start. Recruiters here shortlist on it.
  • Nationality — Customary on UAE CVs, and some roles and visas depend on it.
  • UAE driving licence — Only if you hold one — required for many field roles.
  • Languages — With a level for each. Arabic only if you can work in it.

Opening your cover letter

Two sentences that say which role, why you fit it, and one piece of proof. Recruiters decide whether to keep reading here.

I am applying for the Group Financial Controller position. I run consolidation, controls and audits for a nine-entity group across the UAE, KSA and Egypt, after six years as an audit manager with a Big Four firm.

Interview questions to prepare

Questions UAE employers commonly ask financial controller candidates. Prepare one real example for each — ideally one that is already on your CV.

  1. 1

How do you run a consolidation across currencies and year-ends?

  2. 2

Tell us about a control failure and what you changed.

  3. 3

How do you work with external auditors when you disagree?

  4. 4

What does good Corporate Tax readiness look like for a group like ours?

  5. 5

How did you manage the ERP go-live?

One CV per application

Two financial controller ads rarely ask for the same things in the same words. The CV that gets shortlisted is the one that mirrors the ad in front of the recruiter — which is why a single CV sent to twenty jobs does worse than twenty CVs each tailored to its ad. Paste the ad and dubaicv.app rewrites your real experience around it, shows which of its keywords you now cover and which you honestly don't, and writes the cover letter.

Financial Controller CV: frequently asked questions

What do UAE employers expect from a financial controller?

Ownership of reporting, controls, audits and — increasingly — VAT and Corporate Tax. In groups, consolidation across several entities and countries is usually central.

Is Big Four experience needed to become a financial controller in Dubai?

Not required, but it is common and often preferred. If you came up through industry, show the audits you led from the client side.

Should a financial controller CV mention ERP projects?

Yes — ERP implementations are a common part of the role in growing UAE groups. Say which system, your role and whether it went live on time.
