The less obvious part is that the CV that works in London is missing things a Dubai recruiter looks for first — and that a few practical steps, like attesting your degree, take weeks you should start early.

This guide covers what changes when you apply from the UK: the CV, the paperwork, the timeline, interviewing from abroad, and how to read a UAE job offer against a UK salary.

How UAE employers hire from abroad

Most skilled roles in the UAE are filled through three channels: LinkedIn, the regional job boards (Bayt and GulfTalent), and specialist recruitment agencies. The employer sponsors your employment visa and pays for it. Under Article 6 of the UAE labour law (Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021), employers may not charge workers recruitment or employment costs, directly or indirectly — so a "job" that asks you to pay for a visa is a red flag.

Interviews for overseas candidates are usually by video, sometimes with a final round in person. Two things decide whether an overseas CV gets a call:

• Whether the recruiter can see when and how you would arrive. Put your notice period and an expected availability date on the CV.
• Whether the CV matches the ad. Recruiters and applicant tracking systems shortlist on the ad's own terms. A generic CV sent to every job gets filtered long before anyone reads your experience.

Some ads say "UAE-based candidates only". Many of those employers still interview people who can relocate quickly; a clear availability date and a short line such as "Relocating to Dubai — available from 1 March" gives you the best chance.

What a UK CV is missing for Dubai

A British CV is written to leave personal details out. In the UAE they are expected, because they affect the hiring process:

• Nationality. Customary on UAE CVs.
• Visa status. From the UK this is usually "Requires employment visa (sponsorship)". Say it plainly. We cover the wording in detail in Visa Status on Your CV.
• Notice period. UK notice periods are often one to three months; state yours.
• Location and availability. "London, UK — relocating to Dubai" is clearer than a full address.
• Driving licence. A UK licence can be exchanged for a UAE one without a driving test once you are resident — the UK is on the RTA's list of countries eligible for direct exchange. For field and sales roles, say so.
• Photo. Optional, and common in the UAE. A professional headshot does no harm; a holiday photo does.

Keep the rest of what makes a good UK CV: two pages, achievements with numbers, and no long lists of duties. Spell things the way the ad does — UAE ads mix British and American spelling, and matching the ad helps with keyword screening.

Which sectors hire from the UK

British candidates are hired across the market, but some routes are especially well trodden:

• Construction, engineering and property. Quantity surveyors, project managers and engineers with UK or RICS backgrounds are in steady demand.
• Healthcare. UK-trained clinicians are recruited widely; you will need the licence of the emirate you work in (DHA, DOH or MOHAP).

Degree attestation: start now

For most skilled employment visas, the UAE asks for your degree certificate to be attested. The UAE is not a party to the Apostille Convention, so a UK apostille on its own is not enough. The usual chain for a UK degree is:

1. Certification of the certificate, where required (often by a solicitor or notary).
2. Legalisation by the FCDO's Legalisation Office.
3. Attestation by the UAE Embassy in London, submitted through its appointed legalisation centre.
4. Attestation by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The embassy in London now runs a digital process that can combine the embassy and Ministry steps; check whether yours includes the Ministry attestation before you pay for it again in the UAE. Requirements change, so confirm the current process with your employer's HR or PRO team — but start as soon as you are shortlisted, not after the offer.

A realistic timeline

Every employer is different, but a typical path from the UK looks like this:

1. Applications and shortlisting — a few weeks to a few months, depending on the role and how well your CV matches each ad.
2. Interviews — often two or three rounds over two to four weeks, mostly by video.
3. Offer — you receive an offer letter; in the private sector the formal contract is registered with the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE).
4. Paperwork — degree attestation, passport copies and photos while the employer applies for your entry permit.
5. Arrival — you enter on the entry permit, then complete a medical test and Emirates ID biometrics, and your residence visa is issued.

Interviewing from the UK

• Time zones. The UAE is on GMT+4 all year, so it is three hours ahead of the UK in summer and four in winter. The working week runs Monday to Friday.
• Salary expectations. You will be asked for a figure. Answer in AED per month, and say whether you mean basic salary or total package.
• Video set-up. Test your connection and camera, and have your CV and the ad open. Treat a video interview exactly like an in-person one.
• Why Dubai? Have a real answer. "Tax-free" is not one; career, sector and the region are.

Reading a Dubai offer against a UK salary

UAE salaries are quoted monthly, and personal income is not taxed in the UAE. That makes offers look more generous than a straight comparison suggests, in both directions:

• Look at the whole package. Offers usually split into basic salary plus housing and transport allowances. Some include schooling, flights home and medical insurance for your family; some don't.
• End-of-service gratuity replaces a pension. After a year of service you are entitled to 21 days' basic salary for each of the first five years, and 30 days' for each year after that. It is calculated on basic salary only, which is one reason employers keep the basic low.
• Rent is the big cost. A housing allowance that looks generous in London terms can be tight in the areas you would want to live.
• UK tax residency. Leaving the UK does not automatically end UK tax residency; check the rules for your situation.
